Company victory over the Nawab of Bengal begins British rule.
p>The Battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757 was won less by fighting than by intrigue, as the East India Company under Robert Clive secured the defection of the Bengal commander Mir Jafar. The victory gave the Company effective control of the wealthy province of Bengal.</p><p>It is widely regarded as the beginning of British political dominance in India, opening the way to a century of colonial expansion.</p>
