- Born 3 November 1618 at Dahod, Gujarat, to Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal
- Won the war of succession at the Battle of Samugarh (1658); imprisoned his father Shah Jahan
- Executed his elder brother and rival Dara Shikoh in 1659
- Reimposed the jizya tax (1679) that Akbar had abolished
- Conquered Bijapur (1686) and Golconda (1687), extending the empire to its greatest size
- Fought continuous wars in the Deccan for 27 years against the Marathas (1680-1707)
- Died 3 March 1707 near Ahmednagar; buried at Khuldabad in a simple open-air grave
- His death triggered the rapid decline of the Mughal Empire
