p>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630–1680) carved out an independent Maratha kingdom in western India in defiance of the Mughal Empire and the Deccan sultanates. A brilliant military innovator, he perfected guerrilla warfare (<em>ganimi kava</em>), captured and built a network of hill forts, and created one of the earliest Indian navies.</p><p>His coronation as Chhatrapati at Raigad in 1674 asserted Hindu sovereignty and laid the foundation of a power that would dominate 18th-century India.</p>
