p>Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and, at its height in the early 16th century, one of the largest and richest cities in the world, with perhaps half a million inhabitants. Foreign visitors marvelled at its markets, temples and fortifications set among dramatic granite boulders.</p><p>Sacked after the Battle of Talikota in 1565, its vast ruins survive as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.</p>
