p>South Indian temple architecture evolved over more than a thousand years, from the rock-cut shrines of the Pallavas at Mamallapuram through the towering <em>vimanas</em> of the Chola temples to the vast gopuram-crowned complexes of the Vijayanagara and Nayaka periods. It represents one of the world's great continuous architectural traditions.</p>
