p>Chandragupta Maurya (r. c. 322–297 BCE) founded the Maurya Empire, India's first pan-subcontinental state, by overthrowing the Nanda dynasty of Magadha with the guidance of his mentor Chanakya. He later confronted the successors of Alexander, defeating Seleucus I Nicator and securing territories in present-day Afghanistan through a treaty sealed by a marriage alliance.</p><p>According to Jain tradition, he abdicated late in life to become an ascetic, ending his days at Shravanabelagola.</p>
