p>Pataliputra, near modern Patna, was founded around 490 BCE by the Haryanka king Ajatashatru and grew into the greatest city of ancient India. It served as the capital of the Nanda, Maurya and Gupta empires and was described in wondering detail by the Greek envoy Megasthenes, who noted its wooden ramparts, moats and hundreds of towers.</p><p>It was also a major centre of Buddhist and Jain learning and the venue of the Third Buddhist Council.</p>
